19 A philosophy of the unconscious?


Psychoanalysis, in its various guises, represents one of the first attempts to develop a 'science of the unconscious'. The view that there are processes of unconscious idea formation that differ from those of conscious idea formation turns on understanding the coding relations between 'latent' and 'manifest' content. As part of cognitive science, psychoanalysis may make a significant contribution to our understanding of how ideas arise in minds at all.
