14 Anaïs Nin & Otto Rank

Although psychoanalysis has its roots in neurology, and for Freud was primarily a scientific endeavour, it greatly influenced a significant number of writers and artists. Psychoanalysts, including Freud, extended their analyses outwards to include art, cultural anthropology, myth, and history. Otto Rank was a key figure in this trend and focused on the role that creativity plays in the human psyche with studies of the birth process and of the artist. Anaïs Nin, famous for her diaries, was Rank's analysand and an analyst in her own right for several years. Nin's writing expresses and gives shape to the unfolding of her psyche throughout her life.
