08 Object Relations Theory


As thinking about Freud's theories developed, emphasis shifted to the relationship between the emerging psyche of the infant and its primary carers. 'Object relations' theorists focused on the psychic presentation of such relations in unconscious experience ('phantasy'). Furthermore, they paid attention to the underlying process of self-formation as a process of integrating with and differentiating oneself from the objects of experience.
